In 2010, I painted a shark on my iPad. After that, I gave a few copies away, not feeling good enough. Fast forward a lot of reading, research and experimentation.

Early in 2014, I painted my first acrylic painting, and sold it. You wouldn’t believe how much I sold it for, so I will show you. IT WAS MY FIRST ACRYLIC PAINTING EVER. Along the way, I tested different strategies, techniques and approaches, and made an extensive program in case someone wanted to do what I did. Turns out, MANY DO!

Then I started developing presentations for others as an offering to my graphic and design service. They were skills I had, now I earn from them.

Three years ago, I started selling my expertise, and now I work for 4 different clients doing 4 different types of work – all starting from doing small projects.

Before I show you the painting sale, I want you to recognize that my path is the EXACT same as yours. I was uncomfortable selling my knowledge and experience. I was uncomfortable bringing business into (one of) my skillset(s). I was scared. I was blocking myself from success. Most of all, I was afraid of what would happen when I did become successful.I felt unprepared. Unready.

Here’s how I got over it…

When is the last time you spent your money for the sole purpose of bettering yourself?

Maybe it was clothes, or drinks, or shoes.

But when did you spend it to make you better, smarter, sharper? When did it directly tie into making more money?

 

Sure business degrees can be important, but if you can’t sell your work or your business, is it directly going to your bottom line?

I want your bottom line to look like mine. MONEY COMING IN!

There’s nothing more valuable than bettering yourself. If you earned another $109 each month, in a year that’s $1, 090 this year. Over 5 years, that’s $5, 450.

I don’t do anything I don’t fully believe in, and I believe in you. $109 a month is small compared to what you could earn. The side-streaming limit is established only by you.

 

Back to my sale. So this was a commissioned piece – meaning we set up the deal before it was completed. He was interested in my work, and wanted to know if I’d paint him a piece. I hadn’t done acrylic before. Ever. I decided to experiment, and took the Convert Your Skills strategy for collection and sale of a skill – something you’ll learn too. Here’s my Paypal receipt:

I used my business background and a few simple sales techniques to land a $1, 768.65 paycheck.

It’s important to understand that I’m not world’s top artist. I’m not the world’s top anything!  But, I put time into that work, and it looked great!

So that sale was for art, but maybe you’re not an artist. 

I did some marketing for my full-time job. That’s turned into a marketing consultant role, helping me first reach $154 per month for online management, to $480 per month for social media management, to full growth consulting for $1, 245 per month.

 

It’s not about your knowledge, but it is about your approach and your attitude. There’s no limit to what you do.

“I started meeting with Aaron in early June.  During this time, I wasn’t working and had been out of work for about 7 months for medical reasons.  At our initial meeting, it was just to catch up, have coffee and talk about what was going on in our lives at the time.  He told me he had quit his full time position in order to pursue other jobs that were more satisfying and meaningful to him.  I was really impressed that he had the ability to turn his hobbies and talents into work and money.  I was actually quite jealous!  I quickly told him I needed to learn how to do this!  He said he had been putting together a program to help others change their lives, just like he had done and he would be interested in sharing his program with me.

 

Over the next weeks Aaron and I were meeting regularly but I have to admit I was skeptical that I could do this.  My homework assignments began as introspective research.  I thought about all the things I was good at, asked my friends what they thought I was good at, and, although it was not necessarily the assignment, I was constantly mulling over things I could do to make money and scheming for business ideas. My ideas ranged from a personal organizer, to dog walking, to event management.  I found I had such a wide range of skills that it seemed like I could do anything! But really, it was very hard to translate some of these skills and ideas into money.  I didn’t see how this was going to work and I started to get discouraged around week 4 or 5. 

 

Throughout these weeks when I felt I was getting a little stuck, Aaron maintained his convictions that this was something I could do and after every meeting I left with a sense of purpose.  I was going to figure this out!  Aaron repeatedly made sure I knew that he was always available to me if I had any questions or new concerns that popped up during my research.   Although he was only a phone call away if I needed him, I never actually called.  I stuck to my guns and did my homework and research each week and waited until our weekly meetings to communicate my accomplishments and hesitations from the previous week’s research.  After a few weeks, I finally narrowed my new job down to dog walking. I started getting a little ahead of Aaron and concentrated on a website and marketing myself, and my new business with fliers posted at apartment complexes and vet offices.  I knew I was going to get people to bite – all I had to do was wait! One day turned into two, then three and then a week went by and I hadn’t heard from anyone. It was a major BUST.

 

I continued meeting with Aaron while all of this was happening in the background.  I was now even more firm in my belief that I could not just start making money with my skills.  I realized maybe I really did need Aaron’s help and advice more than I originally thought.  I was feeling completely stuck after my failed attempt but still hopeful that SOMETHING would work out.  

 

Then one day, I decided to make some DIY shelves in my room. I had two pieces of wood left over and decided I was going to use them as a canvas and make a little sign out of them.  I completed my art project and was happy with the results so I posted a picture on Facebook.  Immediately my friends were “liking” my art and someone told me they wanted to buy it.  That’s when the light bulb went off! 

 

Now, it’s been five months since my first meeting with Aaron.  I have sold roughly $1,800 worth of my artwork.  That number does not make me a millionaire, and it doesn’t pay all my bills, but it makes me feel SO GOOD! It’s the best, most satisfying money I’ve ever made.

 

I think the hardest part of this process for me was training my mind to think differently.  It’s easy to talk yourself out of an idea but Aaron taught me to be consistent and persistent.  Results will come if you focus and give yourself time.  I would highly recommend this program to everyone who wants to be more satisfied with the work they are doing, wants flexibility with their work schedule, or who wants a little bit of a personal challenge! The things I have learned about myself in this process continue to increase and my fear of failure has gone out the window.  I know I can take all the information I learned throughout these last months and apply it to future circumstances, wherever I end up in life.  Overall my advice is that life is short and you should do what makes you happy.  If you can make money doing what makes you happy, it makes life just that much sweeter.
